A Bad Day in London

Yesterday was a very bad day. No hospital or police involved, just a confluence of of everything operating under Murphy's Law choosing today as a showcase. I couldn't post yesterday as I was a mess and there was alcohol involved before I hit the bed.

Breakfast started poorly as there were three big conference groups booked at our hotel. We knew ahead so delayed going down. No luck. People everywhere and it took 15 minutes just to get coffee.

No biggy. We can catch the Hop On/Off whenever. Which I wish we hadn't. All the other cities had good tours with opportunities to see lots of tourist stuff.

(A picture of something from the bus to break up the rant.)
London is an interesting hodge podge of very new next door to very old with the streets full of buses, taxis, bicycles, skateboards, motorcycles, scooters, pedestrians and a few cars...and lots of construction.
The bus went by a lot of important stuff we couldn't see (Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, etc) and a few things we could get quick glimpses of.
Add to this: half the speakers for earphones didn't work so you had to move around until you found a good seat, the driver was rude and aggressive with the constant backed up traffic, the woman doing the pre-recorded spiel had an annoying voice, the roads seem to get narrower and narrower, the construction diverting us down endless detours. There were so many tourists I kept expecting one to get hit by our bus. I was getting so claustrophobic that I would have jumped off had there been any place to run. The tour ended with nothing I wanted to go back to under those conditions.

We  decided to wander around on foot but, at this point I have few pictures as I forgot to turn on the outlet I had plugged my phone charger into. Yes, there is a little switch on many plugs and you have to turn it on. Aarrrggghh!

We had lunch at an outdoor cafe by The Tate, saw The Globe Theater, walked much of the Thames, saw an Uber boat, a cute dog trying to decide whether to charge or retreat from some swans (swans won) and wandered up the the London Eye, which Mike had decided to ride with me. But the lines were long and we were tired so we headed home. Tomorrow will be a better day...has to be .

And it was. I'm composing this on the bus back from the White Cliffs of Dover and there will be fun pictures in the next couple of posts.

  1. My memory of London is that it's a fascinating place, but so crowded and so loud. Sounds similar to your experience.

  5. I didn't have this problem with NYC or Chicago but think it has to to with the width of the roads and the predictable grid layout of the streets.
