Arrival Into London
First of all - I really am not a coffee snob. But ALL of the hotels so far think this is OK.
The weather turned warm so I got to dress up like the tourist I thought I was going to be two weeks ago. I have so missed my dresses and Birkenstocks.
And thanks to the sweet lady from Ohio who waved at me indicating she would take a shot of us both.
This train station had some interesting details and was quite the "big deal" back when it was built.
Mike mentioned something about London Bridge and I started singing "has fallen down and moved to Arizona." The look on his face told me he had never heard London Homesick Blues by Gary P Nunn and Jerry Jeff Walker. That was quickly rectified. Go to YouTube real quick if you need rectifying.
This little stop had some cute details
And the we arrived at Kings Cross, home of Harry Potter's train to Hogwarts. I didn't take the time to go photograph the exact location as this place is massive.
We had lunch at some small cafe and the sandwichs were perfection. Mike had tuna and avocado on croissant and mine was a Croque Madame, the broiled, not fried, version of Croque Monsieur.
A very nice BritRail employee took pity on me and walked us half way across the station to show me where to take the bus. Got there and was still confused. Train, bus, and subway all converge here and the signs for all three are everywhere. A kiosk offered help but when the screen opened it was even more confusing.
We decided maybe a taxi was called for and headed out. We found a long line of them out the door and Mike said to head up to the first one. When we got up there, the driver had his back to us so Mike tried to get his attention. When he turned and saw us he shook his head and told us there was a queue and pointed to an opening. There was a queue alright. About half a block long. But it moved fast. The following are just random shots from the car.
And this is a funny lift at The Standard Hotel. Couldn't get a quick one of the whole building but go look online. Interesting.
We have settled in for the night. Laundry has been sent off, hot soak finished, and I'm lying in bed to write this post. Mike is all excited because The Tate, Globe Theater, and several other must-sees are within walking distance. Tomorrow will be a busy day.
Did you find platform 9 3/4 while at the station?
