York - Getting There

When physically overdoing it I used to say I found muscles I forgot I had.  After the mile trek up and down to the castle yesterday and walking the old wall today I have discovered muscles that have been dormant for eons... possibly since a past life.

The train trip was nice. We followed the North Sea for a short period,
and then moved into farmland that made me think of a wet East Texas.

Pastoral eventually gave way to industry and the towns got closer together.
And here is the River Tyne with multiple bridges.
We arrived in York about 11am and headed to the hotel to drop off luggage before catching the local tour bus.

Bear with me on the pictures. I have never experienced something like this before.

We spotted the hotel sign just where we expected.
and we get to the door.

Okay. Off we go down the street and turn left through lots of construction. There is the beetle.
and closer
Yay, we found it ...nope. Down an alley into a parking area. Note black and white stipes over on left.
And closer.
Still not there. Through the tunnel and up a ramp over on the left.
at the top of the ramp over in a corner.

Finally

Dropped of the bags and walked around to find lunch before hopping on the bus.

Walked past a really neat alley like area behind some residential buildings.
And found a place for lunch straight out of storybook. The fire was appreciated as it got cold.
I had a chicken mushroom pie with fresh peas and Mike had a roast beef baguette. Both good.
Now we were ready to see the town.

  1. When you said green beetle, I thought of my old Volkswagen. Imagine trying to find that place in the dark?! That lunch place looks ideal. I think I would’ve told y’all to go on without me and I would’ve stayed in front of the fire

  2. Holy cow! I thought you were gonna show a pic of a tiny little entrance like we had to our hotel in Amsterdam - now I'm trying to figure out what a green beetle has to do with tracking down the way into the hotel: was the beetle already there and so it was an easy landmark? Did the hotel comission the mural just for them? If so, what's the significance of the beetle? (and as Jack would ask, "why do you care about things like that?")
